Many things are extremely frustrating; a clogged drain is an example. Various things can cause your drain to get blocked. The common things are a ball of hair, a discarded toy, and a lump of grease, etc. Therefore, many people use different drain openers to get over this problem. It is advised not to use chemical drain cleaners as they can damage the metal blades and plastic components. You should use a combination of household products to re-open the clogged drains.
A clogged drain is never the result of your carelessness. In most of the cases, keeping the drains clean is not always possible. However, you can take various steps to keep clogs to a minimum. Some of the normal causes of clogged drains are garbage feeding too regularly, dropping a foreign object, or failure to run enough water, etc. Let’s have a look at some of the measures that can be taken to stop the problem of clogged drains in our houses:
Source of the Clog
First and foremost, it is recommended to make sure that you turn your disposal off. This would help you to protect your drains from any injuries or accidents. Once you are done with the first step, examine the train through a torch or a flashlight. When you determine the blockage, look at what tools should be used to solve this problem. After this, turn your blades on manually to break up the clogged materials. One thing should be kept in minds that do not use chemicals to pour down in a garbage disposal. Moreover, quickly turn off electricity to avoid issues afterward.
Unclogging using tools
Secondly, grab the toolbox and look for pliers and plungers to go through the drain. If you find any loose objects inside, pull them out with the help of a tong or pliers. Moreover, try to lift out all the debris that is causing the clog to drain. This way you will be able to remove all the dirt from the sink.
Clean the pipe
Usually, all the garbage disposals are attached to a pipe called a P-Trap. It is recommended to disassemble it and clean it properly. This will help you to remove all the external materials from that pipe. This should be cleaned as it can damage other parts as well. Cleaning this would almost stop all the chances of a clogged drain again. You might experience bad odor, therefore wear a mask.
Maintaining your disposal
After you are done with this, save your disposal from materials that can lead to it again. The best way is to set regular checks of the garbage disposal. This way any material that is causing problems would be removed at once. Furthermore, this would also reduce the chances of it getting clogged again. However, you may witness a semi-clogged drain. This can be solved as well at regular intervals.
